WELLINGTON

This Day. Hon. Mr. llolleston takes temporary charge of the Native and Defence Departments. It has been ascertained that Geo. North, hair-dresser, left by the 'Frisco steamer, taking with him £4000, subscribed for his sweep on the Wellington Cup, and sonic hundreds of pounds on account of another sweep on tho Canterbury Cup. His wife and family left here previously under an assumed name. North had managed to dispose of most of his property here before leaving. At a meeting of his creditors held yesterday it was resolved to take legal advice legarding the position of his affairs.
