Poverty Bay Horticultural and. f loricultural Society.

;IThe Society is to be congratulated on" success of their first Spring Show, and the public deserve commendation for their attendance in snch large num:bers" throughout the day, and fespeciiilly' during last night, when iii spito" of the rain .which. fell...V.Qry.,.heavily. : .th.e^..HaU was crammed, insomuch thab one could hardly elbow, his way through' thei densemass. The arrangements in the, .JSall,, were perfect so far as the available space would permit. The platform was reserved for the J. Battery Band, which at intervals during' the"' evening disf. coursed several excellent selections ..of. music. We heard frequent: complaints, however, of the excessive: din created. There can be doubt ■ that the otherwise agreeable effect of the lriusic^vas marred by the fact that conversation had to be carried on in a loud tone to make oneself audible. The stands for the- exhibits were placed parallel with the length of the building, and a thorough inspection of each exhibit was obtained :ait aglance. The flowers, fruits* and vegetables, were indeed k oo^j kheir quality and profuseness surprising all. 'The awards made by the judges were unquestioned, and so far as we can ascertain gave general satisfaction. We cannot particularize any, nor even the most deserving displays which were, made, leaving : the prize list to - speak for itself. The display of fruit and vegetables was very j fair considering that the Spring has been so late, bub as to the flowers—all we can iterate is that for variety and beauty they could not "have been surpassedr ; The gross proceeds from admission and the sales realised the handsome sum of £26, from Which expenses will have to be deducted. 'It is creditable of a amall community like this to. kn6w that the public came forward in such a liberal manner in the bestowmenfc of prizes, which in every case ■ were worth the having. "It is- the theme of general comment, and reflects favorably oh there' sources of our district, that the Show' was of such a marked success. ,■=■■ '
