LOCAL AND GENERAL.

There was no quorum last night at the usual meeting of the Borough Council. There was a long and friendly discussion among the members of the Tramway Committee re the construction of a tram between Gisborne and Ortnond, and a set of resolutions were framed to submit to the County Council. Much, however, has to be done in the way of preliminary work j as for instance the sanction of the ratepayers will have to be obtained before a permanent tramway can be legally laid down. Of this sanction-being obtained there is little doubt, but still there is much to consider befere the work is commenced in earnest.

The Taranaki Herald says that at a. meeting of creditors in the estate of Jesse' Philips held last week, some very strong language was used. Mr. Cock, one of the creditors, asked the debtor what was the cause of the fire which had occurred at his store, "whereupon the debtor became fearfully wrath and said if Mr. Cock meant to cast any insinuations on him (the debtor), he would punch Mr. - Cock's nose ! At the close of the meeting the chairman, Mr. Halse, informed the debtor that he was the most insolent bankrupt whom he had ever met.
