BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Council was held at noon ro-day, for the purpose of installing the Mayor elect; for the ensuing year. There were present Councillors Bennett, Whinray, Piesse, Townley, and Clayton. Councillor Bennett having been voted to the chair, Captain Porter made the declaration required by the Act, and took his seat for another term of twelve months. His Worship thanked the burgesses, through their representatives the Crs. present, for the honorable position in they had again placed him. Though it was impossible for a man occupying a public position to please everybody, still it was his desire to be on amicable terras with all parties, and to do his duty in the best interests of the Borough. He hoped that the good understanding between himself and the Council would continue though they might have to differ on some points of detail. Cr. Townley moved a vote of , thanks ■ to Captain Porter for his services as Mayor during the past term. Tkis was seconded i Cr. Bennett in a few well chosen romarks. . . . Cr,; Piesse congratulated Captain Porter on beine installed in the office of Mayor for the third timo. He did not know whether there wns" any comparison between His Worship and Dick Whittington, hah probably that wag owing to the absence of the Bow Bells, ' which chimed his recall to London, j It was not often, even in small communities like our own, where were so few leadiri? minds to selectrfrom, ■ that any one gentleman was placed in such an honorable position for three terms of office- i - Cr. Clayton fully concurred in all that had fallen from previous speakers. . At the invitation of «His Worship an adjournment was then made to host Page's and more pleasant things were said over some excellent " phiz."

The Yanlts have struck another " notion !" A recent fair in Michigan offered as a unique attraction a public wedding in front of the grand stand.. Prizes for the women who will consent to be married are given, including forty acres of land. Pass the idea along.
