The Poverty Bay Herald AND East Coast News Letter. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 13, ISBO.

We are informed that Mr. Maberly, the priucipal of the Gisborne school, has, with Mrs. Maberly, been appointed to take charge of a school in the Waikato. Mr. Maberly leaves Gisborne sometime next month. At the late examination of the Gisborne school scholars by Mr. Hill, the Inspector for the Napier district expressed himself highly satisfied at the results. Mr. L. Mclntosh writes us as follows : — "In regard to your leading article of Thursday afternoon, re the facilities aftorded by the Insolvent Courf for debtors escaping their liabilities, I beg to request you will publish my letter as I wrote it, as many people reading your paper will think what I said was not worth publishing." Now the letter was so well worth publishing, that we made it a leading notice in our columns, and felt much obliged to Mr. Mclntosh for his communication. We would remind our tradesmen and others, that the "Poverty Bay Almanac" .is now in course of preparation. We have no hesitation in saying that this will be the best medium for advertising yet afforded to the inhabitants of this district, as owing to i r the large circulation it is intended to have, and the usefulness of the sheet both in the business and dwelling, ad\ertisers will have the greatest pu blicity gi yen to th eir farors. In addition to being issued to each subscriber to this journal, the publisher has madearrangements whereby a large number of extra copies will be printed off which will be distributed in various towns. The almanac will contain the calendar, with blank spaces for raemos. in each month, official directory, English mail departures and arrivals, wharf dues, gardening operations for each mouth, and a varied amount of other useful information. A large number of the spaces l'eserved have been ' already secured. We regret to learn that a blight has attacked many of the peach trees in several parts of the colony. There seems to be no remedy for the trees so affected. The blight makes its appearance first on the lower part of the tree, and gradually travels upwards until the whole is dead. The wet weather has seriously iujured the young fruit on some of the trees in this district. A phenomenon was witnessed last night between the hours of nine and twelve o'clock at midnight in many of the gardens in and around Gisborne. This was a hnge swarm of a small kind of beetle, which covered every shrub and tree so that the foliage could scarcely be seen, notwithstanding a bright moonlight. At sunrise this morning there was Juofc a beetle to be seen. There was a case of considerable importance decided by the Auckland Resident Magistrate the other day. A woman named Mills obtained a "protection" order in 1854 against her husband on the ground that he had failed to maintain her. There . was no question of cruelty. There appeared to have been continuous cohabitation, notwithstanding "protection" order. The value of this legal provision appear? to have been thoroughly appreciated. The ■wife becomes a " boarding-house-keeper " and the husband a " lodger." The " lodger " is of course in the confidence of the landlady. He gives orders for butcher's meat, Ac. When the bill comes in, he cannot Eay. He is only a lodger, and he refers to is wife. But the wife has a " protection" order as against her husband. The butcher goes before the Eesident Magistrate to recover Lll 18s. 9d, but he is nonsuited. The wife is "protected" against her husband's liabilities. The "protection" order was never intended for such a case as this. It was intended for industrious women who had bad husbands to rob them.
