HOSPITAL BALL.

The Ball last night in aid of the Hospital fund aud initiated by the members of the J Battery,' was more largely attended than has been the case of any like gathering previously held in Gisborue. The hall was crowded, but there were not sufficient gentlemen to couple with the ladies, many of whom had to remain seated during portions of the night. The dance music by the Battery Band was all that could be wished, the selections being of the best of their kind. Mr. Craig catered with his usual liberality the provisioning being excellent and abundant. The Ball did not break up until after 4 o'clock this morning. : Everyone was pleased with the whole of the arrangements which were carried out in their integrity. There were in all about 300 ladies and ; gentlemen present, and we have uo doubt but what a handsome sum will be placed to the credit of the Hospital funds. The result caunot but be gratifying to all coucerned in the management, and this is especially so to those members of the Committee of the J. Battery who were indefatigable in their exertions with the view of contributing towards its unqualified success. The attendance exceeded by far the estimate which the most sanguine expected. This may be reasonably accounted for on the grounds that the proceeds were devoted to a charitable object, and that it was the concluding ball of the season. It was especially noticeable that .a great number of our country settlers, With their wives and daughters, put in 'an ' appearance and participated heartily in the enjoyments of the occasion. Miv.O. W. Skeet acted as master of ceremonies, aiid that in a right practical manner. In the second part the music was executed by Messrs. Sherriff, Cox, Hall, andFaram, in a. manner which could not be taken exception to in point of time or correctness, by the most fastidious dansante. The following were the stewards, who, as far as tlioir role was concerned, fulfilled their programme to the letter : Captain G. J. Winter, Hon. AssistautSurgeon Pollen, Lieutenants U'Ren and Boyhm, Sergeants Skeet, Graham and Cox, and Messrs. Bourke and Wallace.
