The Hawke's Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society's Show opened yesterday when sheep alone were exhibited and judged. The attendance was much, larger than usual on the first day, and the exhibits were superior to last year. In number they were on the whole about the same as last year, the falling, ofl in long wools being compensated by an increase in Merinos. The Champion Cups for the best ram and best ewe in long wools were taken by Thomas Tanner. The Champion Cup in Merinos fell to a ram of. I)ouglas McLean, son of the late Sir Donald McLean, the ram being bred by James Gibson. This is the^ third year the Cup has fallen to jsbuglas McLean, and it will now become his property. To-day is the grand day of the show. All places of business are closed and Napier deserted. Horses, machinery, implements, etc., are to be exhibited, and there is to be a parade of entires. WELLINGTON. This Day. The services of twelve of the Constabulary Inspectors is to be dispensed with, but the names have not transpired. AUCKLAND. This Day. It is stated that Sup-Inspector Pardy, of Auckland, and Sub-Inspector Kenny, of the Thames, will be dispensed with. The Waste Lands Board have decided to sell the Te Aroha block of 17,600 acres to Foster and Grant, for the Lincolnshire farmers, at 33s to 34s per acre. Capt. Steele, as representatime of Grant and Forster, has agreed to the conditions made by the Board and will introduce 225 adult immigrants, forming 45 families, to be settled on the land six months after their arrival. NEW PLYMOUTH. This Day. Mrs. Whitely, i-elict Rev. John Whitely, who was murdered at the White Cliffs, died yesterday. CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. A woman, named Chadwick, fell into the river yesterday while helplessly drunk, but was rescued. TIMARU. This Day. Tiie revenue of the Education Board was £9221, expenditure, £9184, leaving only £63 to pay the salaries of Inspector and Secretary. A Committee was appointed to revise the salaries of teachers of the large schools with a view of further economy.
