COOK COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Cook County Council was held last night. Present :— Crs. Graham (Chairman) Porter, McKay, Sunderland, Chambers, Wi Pere, and Johnston. Applications. — From Mr. A. Lodger, requesting an increase of £20 on the amount of contract for Wainui flat road, as he had omitted to include sawn timber in the estimate. The Council could not entertain the application. From — Magarry and Dwyer, Contractors for the Ormond drains, asking remission of overtime penalties. It was agreed to remit one-half. Caution. — A letter was received from Messrs. Rees and Wi Pere, cautioning the Council not to proceed with the Wainui flat road, until proper fences were erected to protect the Native cultivations as defined in clause 106, " Native Lands Act." It was proposed by Cr. Johnson, and seconded by Cr. j McKay, that a committee, consisting of ! the Chairman, Cr. Porter, McKay, Wi Pere and the mover meet the Trustees and arrange matters amicably. Waikohu District.— lt was resolved on representation being made, Mr. D. Fraaer that the sum of £40 be expended on the Waikohu road. Waimata Bridge. — In reply to Mr. Rees' application to erect the Waimata Bridge, the Council stated that from having no -jurisdiction in the matter, they could not entertain it. Mr. Rees also wrote asking Council's support by resolution to get the Government to remove the inalienability of Native lands held under memorial of ownership. Resolved that the Council support Mr. Rees in the matter, and make the necessary representations to the Government. Bridge. — The School Committee in Tologa Bay requested that a small bridge be erected near the school house. It was deferred for consideration. Report. — In a report from the Inspector of Slaughter Houses there was a suggestion inter alia that auctioneers should give the descriptive brands of all cattle sold by them to the purchasers. Councillors approved of the suggestion but the consideration* of the whole report was deferred. County Subsidy. — The Chairman informed the Council that Mr. McDonald, M.H.R., had given his opinion that the full subsidy of £1 for £i would be allowed to those Counties where" no railway expenditure had been made, which would, if they could receive it, make an increase of £1 , 100 to the County revenue. The Clerk was instructed to enquire, and if such be the case, to make immediate application. Tenders. — Ormond road, M. Boland's tender being the lowest, viz., £694, was accepted. The following are the accepted tenders for the East Coast Road : — H. Smith, Gisborne to Tolago, £107 ; H. McClutchey, Tolago to Tokomaru, £100 ; J. Trimmer, Tokomaru to Waiapu, £92. Road Overseer. — There were twelve applications. Mr. A. Y. Ross was appointed at a salary of £3 a week, conditionally that he make no charge for overtime, irrespective of the number of hours per day required. Valuer. — It was resolved to invite applications for the office of County Valuer. The Council rose at midnight.
