The Poverty Bay Herald AND East Coast News Letter. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, ISSO.

One' or two typographical errors occurred in our notice of the horse parade in Saturday's .issue. -Bothwell is described as "a beautiful brown horse ;" it should have read ** beautiful brouze chesnut." Maroro is set down as a- low-set, bony, well-made chesnut horse •;"■ it should have been "low-set, long, well-made cbesnut horse." . Some few days back wo published in the columns of the Herald that the Middle Eoad between Matawhero and Mr. Poynter's was open for traffic. This had been temporarily closed for repairs of drains, &c. ' Now many people have misunderstood our notice, and have presumed that the road between Roseland and Waerenga-a-hika — the road which is being formed by • ■ Mr; J. R. Hurrey under contract to the County Council — was the road we referred to as being open for traffic. We need only say that nothing of the kind was intended and that persons' trespassing on the line of Mr. Hurrey's contract will be proceeded against, and punished with the (utmost rigor of the law. ■We need hardly remind our readers of the entertainment, to be given this evening by the J Battery Variety Troupe. The programme is an excellent one, and we hope to see a crowded house. . Tne Government have caused Te Whiti and Tohu to be informed of the result of the trial of the 59 Maori fencers, who, as will be seen by our telegrams, were sentenced to two years' imprisonment with hard . labor. This completely disposes Te Whiti's prophecy that the natives never would be tried or sentenced. It is intended to arrest all the adults in the next batch of fencers he sent down after receiving notice and it is thought this will be the last act .of the fencing farce. If boys are sent they will simply be ducked or birched and sent home again to encourage the others. . The usual fortnightly meeting of the . Borough Council will be held in the new Council Chamb3rß to-morrow, when business of local importance will be brought forward ; among other things the report of the Committee relating to the purchase of Mr. Wm. Adair's wharf and right of foreshore. - T . ; A printer's error has been allowed to pass uncorrected in an advertisement relating to the Poverty Bay Turf Club. Instead of it being held at the Masonic '<H.all; ott Saturday, 2nd October, at 7,30., as printed, the .place of meeting is the Masonic Hotel, .at the hour and date named.

The valuable property sold this day at public auction by Messrs Pitt & Benuett; by order of the mortgagee, and formerly in the occupation of Mr. J. A. Jury, situated in Grey-atreet, on the banks of the Tareheru River, was purchased by Mr. C. D. Berry for £275, subject to a mortgage of his own for a similar amount. On this favorite estate is erected a handsome six roomed cottage, and is now in the occupation of Mr. S. C. Caulton. The furniture and effects of Mr. Jury were sold at the same hour, and realised very good prices.

One of our lawyers went into his office the other day and found a parcel on his table addressed to him. He opened it and fouud it contained a terra cotta picture representing a cow, which one man was pulling by the horns and another by the tail, -while a lawyer, in wig and gown, was subsequently milking her. He had the good sense to enjoy a hearty laugh at a little joke, and to thauk the sender for the picture. — Exchange.

A ludicrous incident occurred at an inquest at Hokitika the other day. The coroner, by mistake, made, out the warrant for the burial of the hotel-keeper, at whose house the inquest was held, instead of the deceased.,
