LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council will be held this evening in the new Council Chambers. There will be business of importance likely to lead to a long sitting. Among other matters will be the question of honorarium to the Mayor, which is likely to cause considerable discussion. Mr. C. D. Berry as a new member will be introduced to the members of the Borough Council and will take his seat for the first time.

We understand that a requisition is in course of signature, asking Mr. W. F. Crawford to stand his candidature for the Mayoralty at the forthcoming election. If this be the case there will most likely be a contest, as the names of Captain Porter and Mr. C. D. Berry are mentioned as likely to place themselves in opposition.

Two debts cases only were brought into the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning. They were more of disputed accounts or disputedjresponsibility, and involved no question of interest.

Mr. Clark, managing director of the Pacific Petroleum Company, together with a number of those interested, intend proceeding by the " Noko," to-morrow morning, up the Taraheru, for the purpose of inspecting a site for a refinery which has been offered to the company on the most liberal terms. The site proposed ia near Makaraka, but it must be found suitable for the purpose, if the company are to accept of the offer. To demonstrate this, this trip has been organised. What isf required is that a ocean-going vessel of about 200 tons burden, of light draught, say about oft, shall be able to proceed up the river to the contemplated site and load or discharge cargo at the refinery. The advantage of fixing the site up the Taraheru river will be that it will save the cost of at least three miles of pipe line. We anticipate that a large number will avail themselves of the invitation to proceed by the Noko, and the result of the visit will be satisfactory.
