LOCAL AND GENERAL.

In furnishing a report of List night's meeting, our reporter lias not travelled over old ground. The bulk of Mr. Rees' speech was the same yesterday evening as he had repeated at previous meetings and reported in these columns. What was new is given, but the vituperative language employed by the speakers we have purposely excluded as not in any way tending to edification.

The R.M.s Court was sitting in debts' cases as we went to press.

At the Licensing Court to-day, the following applications for transfers were granted :— Mr. Siunmius, Isle of Mull, Hotel— granted. Mrs. DeCosta — Tur;iugaiiui Hotel — granted. Mr. Goldsmith, application for a reduction of licensing fee — granted.

Mr. S. C. Caultou ha 3 done a very geuerous act, which should not be readily forgotten. At the earnest request of a number of the ratepayers, Mr. (Jaulton was prevailed upon to allow himself to be placed in nomination for one of the vacant chairs in the Borough Council. But when it came to be represented to him that Mr. Wliinray, who had served the Council long and faithfully, might be unseated upon a splitting up of votes, Mr. Caultou at once insisted on withdrawing from the contest. He said that he did not feel he ought to place himself in opposition to a candidate whose services had been tried and found so useful. For this reason Mr. Caulton retires, but this gentleman may feel well assured that at any future election for the Borough Council his election will be assured should he become a c uididate.

Sir, — The public desires to know whether the £230. alleged to have been pud to Mr. Rees by Mr. Pereival Barker, is included in the £500 advanced by Barker for stamp duties, or whether they are two separate items. — I am, &c, One Who Want to Know.
