Engineer's Report. Sir,— l have the honor to inform you that >pfans and specifications have been prjeparedy and tenders called for works on the East Coast Road, Wainui JPl^.t. Tenders have not been called for repairs toKarawa Bridge, and I am of opinion that a' 'temporary work will.; suffice _to make the structure safe for traffic, which I propose carrying out by day labor. Very little progress has been made; '■on : the works ift harid^ during: ; the, : past months owing to the wet weath.er. ... - ; At the commencement of winter the contractor : for grvelling .the Bridge Road discontinued work, owing to the road becoming impassable^ Ido not .consider it advisable to complete ";this contract with the gravellihg from the Matawhero. crossing, it being too small . and fine a nature to make a gbdd _road with on aUuviai'soii. T would ;recbrnmend. that. ,the, road be pitched' With stone >■* ftqm ; the^-^^Quarry; and^ then ■gravelled } or that gravel be obtained from Ormphd ..whereit is very-much larger and better suited for the purpose. 1 I would- recommend "that; tenders be "called for at once, for forming and metalling the: main road for Quarry Tram to Kaiteratahi VHill. I propose to form, pitch, "and.gravel road as., far as the .Mahunga Bridge, the remaining portion formed and gravelled only. " I would ask' the Counbil to inform ma .what -portion :of the Ormond-Opotiki^ - Road it. is prpppeed to spend tW Geiieral : . Gpverhment grant of £500; and also that previously -vptei for ' the GisborneWairba Rpadj this summer, and on ■ whicli portion "of : said' v rbad : the; works are .to be carriißd put. "! ; i; consider it advisable that Rangers" ihould be appointed in the district with power to impound cattle straying; on the roads. Considerable damage is done to the drains, Ac. , owing to the number thit are at large.— l am, <fee.^ v . J4- ■>£. /?■%■ ; Geo. J.'Wintek. Oh the report being read, the recommendations were referred to the Financial GomniitEee'fpr their consideration. "Tenders;— None of the tenders received .for, Jfche East Coast Road (Wainui Flat) were accepted, the Council deeming' the work ratheic too expensive. How-, ever, on- the motion of 'Or. Reeves, ......the Council sanctioned an expenditure'of a sum not exceeding £90, for f.culverts and ditching required. Paambnts. — All the accounts received 1 : w;ere passed for payment. ; ;The Council adjdurned gliortly*.ifter 12. '" ."
