LATEST TELEGRAMS.

(PROM OTJR. OWU CORRESPONDENT. ) NAPIER. This Day. The ceremony of opening the Port Ahuriri Bridge yesterday was rather a tame affair. A half-holiday was proclaimed, all business places being closed, but in the morning it rained heavily, and people feared that the afternoon would be the same. The Volunteers had from the first refused to attend. The Mayor and Councillors, Fire Brigade and about 200 others were present. The Mayor made a short speech, eulogising Mr. Sheehan, M.H.K, as the person to whom the erection of the bridge is due. Three cheers were then given for Mr. Sheehan and the Mayor declared the bridge open. An adjournment was then made to Tillers' Hotel, at Petane, where a champagne lunch was provided by Mr. Villers free to all coiners.
