COMPLIMENTARY BENEFIT TO ME. BROWNE.

The concert given to our townsman the Postmaster, Mr. Geo. J. Browne, last evening was a success on tto wKole. The Ten. Archdeacon Williams presided in the absence of His Worship the Mayor. The attendance was nther thin, My. Macfarlane's Hall not being more than half -full. The musical portion was principally rendered by the members of the Gi&borne Philharmonic Society, last night, by. their first appearance before the Gisborne public. The solos were fairly sung, but the choruses did not go smoothly, shewing the want of practice. Mr. East, who does not belong to the society, together with Mr. Austin, kindly assisted, the former singing a solo very sweetly, showing considerable musical culture. Mr. Bush also sang the " Blue Alsatian Mountain," by Claribel, very nicely. The Cadet Corps went through a series of evolutions under Captain Daly, and greatly delighted the audience. After the intermission, the Yen. Archdeacon presented the address, which is neatly engrossed on parchment. The Gisborne Band failed to put in an appearance, after promising to perform. The proceeds of the entertainment have been generously handed over to the Treasurer of the Ladies' Benevolent Society, to whom Mr. Browne addressed the following letter :— Gisborne. 4th August, 1880. Dear Sir,— While thanking my numerous friends for their kindness to myself, I beg to hand to you the enclosed money, it being the proceeds of last night's complimentary concert. I think that money that has been raised by kindly good feeling cannot be better spent than in relieving the destitute. I have therefore decided, in consideration of the present-bad times and distress to give the enclosed to the Gisborne Benevolent Society. lam&c, Geo. J.Browne. The Secretary Benevolent Society, Gisborne.
