LOCAL AND GENERAL.

On Monday next, the preliminary operatians for commencing work at the Oil Springs will be under weigh, au engineer and assistants having been engaged to repair and put in order the machinery on the ground. Tenders have been received for making the required borings, which will be commenced inside of a month from the present date. There is not a member of the General Assembly but what we think will hold Sir George Grey's friends responsible, if, after what occurred in the House of Representatives last night, and which will be found in our telegranu of to-day, they do not take prompt and decisive steps to have him safely conveyed to the Kauwau, We are pleased to notice that Mr. Allan Macdonald voted with the Government against Sir George Grey's motion for a repeal of the Property Tax, not that we approve of the tax if a better can be substitured, but then Sir George had nothing to substitute that a sane man could endorse. The draft Bill, vesting the Education Reserves of the Poverty Bay District in the Hawke's Bay, in lieu of the Auckland Education Commissioners, prepared at the instance of the Gisborne School Committee, having beon forwarded to our member, the following is the telegram in reply : — " To J. Cuff, Esq.— Re, your draft Bill, Education Reserves, will rntroduce the same on Tuesday, — Allah McDonald." Mr. Allan McDonald, our member, sends us the following by wire: — "Introduced Native Lawsuits Bill to-day. The contents are almost embodied in the Government Native Lauds Bill, so there are two chances of getting it through this session." The football match announced for last Saturday — Lawyers v. All Comers — fell through, the All Comers not mustering in sufficient force to have a good game. The match will be played to-morrow on the Waikanae, play to commence sharp at 2.30 o'clock, The following are the names of the respective teams : — All Comers : Mills, Sommerville, Tancred, Pavitt, O'Meara, Witner, Adams, Bull, Ratcliffe, Graham, Haigb, Wyllie, Sorry, Dunlop, Stagpole, White, Te Kani, Pigeon. Laio : Pavitt, Major, Nolan, Humphries, Helps, Parau, Tako, Henderson, Skeet, Chrisp, Ward (2), Cressweil, Rees, and Day. Messrs. Bromley & Buller anuouncs that they have received a consignment of opossum rugs of very superior quality which are now on view at their mart. These rugs are procured from Southern Tasmania, where the colder climate is more suitable to growth and texture of the fur than the warmer regions of Australia. On inspection of those now on view one caii readily pronounce bhis to be the case, for in appearance they are decidedly superior to the Australian fur.
