LOCAL AND GENERAL;
The examination of pupil teachers and candidates for the scholarships, offered for competition by the Hawke's Bay 1 Board of Education, has been fixed, by advertisement in another column, to take place on the 12th of July next, instead of on the sth, as previously announced. Mr. Hill, the Inspector of schools, will attend and personally supervise, which will be more satisfactory to all parties. The Midwinter vacation for the Government Schools in this district have been postponed till a week later than previously notified. They will now commence on the 2nd of July, and terminate on the 16th. The meeting last night at Macfarlane's Hall was for the purpose of allowing Mr. W. L. Reea to explain the nature aud bearings of a Bill which had been drafted by him and introduced into the Assembly by Mr. Allan McDonald, and read a first time. The Bill as explained in a pamphlet published by Mr. Kees has already appeared in our columns, and the matter contained in it is familiar to our readers. We therefore do no more in ' the present issue then gave to our readers a condensed report of last night's meeting. The cutter Wahapu is announced to leave for the East Coast as k f ar as Waipiro on Saturday next. It will be seen from our advertising columns, that Mr. W. Judd, general storekeeper, has in consequence of increased business, made a move into the more extensive premises opposite Mr. G. W. bishop, chemist. Captain C. W. Ferris wishes it to be made known through our columns, that he la to be found at his office, in the. premises of Messrs Pitt and Bennett, through the day, where he will be willing to give all information to persons who are required to fill up their schedules under the Property Tax Act. These schedules require much attention in filling them up, and the number of persons who are able to do this w ill be found very few. The accuracy of these schedules will have to be declared t 0 under the Act, and the consequences of sending in incorrect or deficient returns are very serious. Captain Ferris, as Government Assessor for Cook County, has expressed his willingness to afford every assistance to all persons requiring it. At the R. M. Court this day, Allan v. Parsons Trustees claim £34 for the value of two beasts illegally distrained, and sold, and damages done to 47 head of other cattle, Mr. Ward Junr, for plaintiff Mr. JRobinson for defendant. After a long and protracted hearing, judgment was reserved.
