LOCAL AND GENERAL.
A cablegram was received last evening in Gisborne, stating that Mr. Clark would leave Sydney per first steamer for Poverty Bay for the purpose of commencing operations on our oil springs. |
There are not a few in this community who will with deepest regret remember | that there was a gentleman, aud a JJP., who came into our midst, and who, after some months, suddenly disappeared '■ one Sunday late at night. This gentlemany named Flexinan, visited Sydney, where he has done his best to injure the character of our Oil Spriugs, by representing that he owns the whole of the country round-about, and that the Oil Springs belong to the Natives, the Europeans having no claim upon them. At a distance this man's narration, may have a damaging eftect, but as steps will be taken to disabuse .the minds of the people of Sydney, I the mischief attempted will at the best or ! worst be only temporary. Still, it is annoying that one man unknown in a strange place, as he is known to Poverty Bay, should possess the power of inflicting an injury in our district. At a sitting of the Licensing Commis- [ sioners this day, the application of Mr. | Darvill, Ferry Hotel, Big River, was granted. That of Mr. Mulloolly was postponed until the 29th instant.
