House of Representatives.

The House met at 2.30. Eeplying to Mr. Murray, the Premier said the Government woiild place on the estimates the amount of fees payable on the patent of the

order of knight-hood conferred on the Speaker. Mr. Lundon moved that the Native Affairs Committee consist of nineteen members, and that Messrs Thomson, De Lautour, McDonald, Whyte, and the mover, be added to the committee. The motion was opposed by the Government, and was negatived on a division by 40 to 29. Sir George Grey and Mr. Hamlin immediately gave notice to have their names removed from the Committee. Mr. Hursthouse moved a resolution, rerquiring the Government to issue an order in Council forbidding the transportion of cattle from the North to South Island. Mr. Hall did not agree with the motion, as the disease was confined to a small district in Auckland, from which cattle were never taken South ; besides which, the disease was decreasing, and there was no danger of its spreading. Discussion was interrupted by the adjournment at 5.30. The House resumed at 7.30. Hon. William Fox continued the debate on the Licensing Bill in a lengthy speech against the evils of drunkenness. Dr. Wallis, Messrs Saunders and Dick spoke on several features of the Bill, which was ultimately read a second time without dissent. The following Bills were also read a second time : — Lodger's Protection (Stewart), Females Redress (Stewart), Oamaru Harbor (Shrimiski), Joint Stock Companies (Stewart), Execution against Real Estate (Stewart), Crown Grants Amendment (Rolleston), Otago Harbor Board Empowering Bill (Stewart). The House adjourned at 12.40. The debate on the Financial Statement is expected to come on to-night, and there is likely to be a long and and acrimonious opposition. It is averred that Major Atkinson has represented the state of finances far worse than they really are.
