MEETING AT ORMOND.

There was a numerous attendance of settlers ai the public meeting, held in the Public Hall, Ormond, on Saturday, May 15th, convened for the purpase of petitioning the Cook County Council to form and malve the Ormond Road, from Br uce's Cutting to the Mahunga Creek, without delay. On the motion of Mr. D. M. Ross, seconded by Mr. R. Bach, Mr. J. Maynard was unanimously elected Chairman. Mr. Maynard read the notice from the Herald as to the purport of the meeting, and then referred to- a resolution passed by the Cook County Council at their lasc meeting, viz., their intention not to proceed with the Ormond Road \intil next Spring, which he considered would be most detrimental to the interests of the district, inasmuch that the Government had already made a grant to the Council for the express purpose of making the road now under question, and also reminded the meeting that the Council had done little or nothing for this district except making the two Ormond costings. Mr. Bidgood was in favor of the road being made at once. Mr. Owen Cowen expressed his | opinion as to the neglectful manner the district had been treated by the Council. He considered it was of vital importance to thi3 district that the road should be made at once, and pointed out the many easy, accessible roads for procuring metal required ; also that labor could now be procured at a much cheaper rate than in former times, on account of so many men being unemployed. Mr. Cowen was of opinion that the greatest efforts should be taken to urge the Council to spend the money that is justly due to this district for the purpose of making the road without delay. Mr. Maynard Btated that if the work was let in small sections, and contractors were bound to a reasonable extent to complete the work, the road might easily be made before the bad weather set in. Mr. P. Barrie, and Mr. D. McLeod were both of opinion the road should be commenced at once. Proposed by Mr. P. Barrie, seconded by Mr. D. McLeod — "That a petition be drawn out, signed by residents in the district, and forwarded to the Council." The resolution was carried unanimously.
