A TALE OF THE PACIFIC. Wm. Opperman, Eaq., a wealthy island trader was for some months lying ill at Happemamma an island of the Kingßmill Group, in the Pacific. He had been seized with rheumatic fever, which was followed by complicated disorders of a terribly severe nature, assuming the form of a species of palsy never before known, The sufferer's limbs swelled, the legs lost all sensibility to pain ; the foot could be wrenched round or the skin pierced with a lance without inflicting the slightest suffering. The sick man was evidently unconscious of his having leys, and his bruin was seriously affected as with lunacy. In this deplorable state he was kindly brought from tho islands to Auckland by Mr. H. Henderson in the schooner Coronet, Captain Moellcr and, being a German, lie was received by the German Consul, G. Von der Heyde, Esq., and placed in the District Hospital, where he received treatment for three weeks with no indication of improvement, his case being pronounced by one and all a most hopeless one.
