The first sod has been turned of Kawakawa railway. At the R.M. Court yesterday, the charge of indecent assault preferred by Alice McCarthy against George Sydney Hansen, was dismissed. The alleged assault on Mr. Luke, foreman of the Good's Department Railway, has not been cleared up. The inquest on the marine found floating in the harbor on Sunday, resulted in a verdict of " Found Drowned." The body was identified as that of Abel Hitherington, servant to Captain Bruce of H.M.S. Cormorant. It is believed he fell overboard when going down to meet his boat. By the Meg Merrilies from Levuka, intelligence has been received of the murder of an American, named Johnston, of the firm of Johnston aud Chaffin, by natives of the island of Aoba. CHRISTOHURCH. The police on Sunday night prevented the Young Men's Christian Association from singing in the streets, alleging they caused ah obstruction. • t " The Secretary complains it is not fair treatment, as the Railway Band is allowed to play precisely in the same spot (Cathedral Square), drawing crowds of peeple.
