WELLINGTON.

This Day,

The official enquiry, respecting the recent accident to the boiler of the steamer Manawatu was held yesterday afternoon. The evidence showed that the accident was caused by negligence in not attending to the boiler, which had salt in it, and that the vessel had not a certificated engineer, but one who was sent on the voyage merely to clear her at the Customs. He, however, had not charge of the engine-room. Seager, who had charge, was not certificated. Judgment was postponed. Nominations for the Rangitekei seat take place on the sth May, and the poll on Bth May. As yet Sir William Fox is the only candidate.
