LONDON,

The Marquis of Hartington, after his audience with the Queen, had an interview with Earl Granville and Mr. Gladstone, and returned to Windsor yesterday, to intimate to Her Majesty that he declined the task of forming a new Ministry. To-day Gladstone was summoned by the Queen. At wool sales to-day 10,000 bales were offered. Market remains firm, and an active demand continues. Tenders for the Oamaru Water Works Loan were opened to-day. The amount of £89,000 was subscribed at from 96 to 101£. Australian tallow declining ; beef, 32s : mutton, 335-6 d. April 24. Mr. Gladstone haa been appointed First Lord of the Treasury, and Chancellor of the Exchequer, and has accepted the task of forming a new Ministry, ft is probable that Earl Granville will accept office as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
