LOCAL AND GENERAL

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Gisborne District School Committee was held yesterday evening. Notification was received that the Hawke's Bay Board of Education approved of the appointment of Miss M. E. Morgan as a pupil teacher. The selection of an assistant mistress for the School, having been left in the hands of Mr. Hill, Inspector of Schools, that gentleman was making every effort to obtain the services of a thoroughly competent and well-trained infants' teacher. It was resolved to apply to the Board for the erection of a gymnasium for the boys' portion of the School-ground, and to urge the Board to enlarge the teacher's dwelling, and to subsidise the School Library Fund. Lamps are also to be provided for one of the School-rooms for the convenience of teachers o» others attending the School for night work. The Chairman reported that parents of children, who had hitherto neglected to attend the School, had complied with the notices sent them, and thus avoided the enforcement of the compulsory clauses of the Act. The race meet at Taranaki on the 31st ult. seems to have been the best they have ever had. The attendance was good, and everything went off smoothly. The Maiden Plate of 50 soys. was won by Marie Stuart, Port Wine who was racing the winner in the straight ran against a post and threw his rider, much to the disgust of his backers. The Steeplechase of 80 soys. was a poor affair, Matau winning easily. Grey Momus or Loch Lomond did not put in an appearance as was expected they would do. The Cup of 50 soys was won by Hailstorm, Butler's Numa, who was the favorite, only securing third place. The Jockey Club Handicap of 250 soys. was won by Resolution, Opawa second, and Horsfall's King Quail third. The Hurdle Race of 50 soys. was won by Otawa, Matau second. The Autumn Handicap of 100 soys. was won by King Quail, Gst. lOlbs., Butler's Laertes, 7st. 31bs,, second. Carringtou, son of Mr. Carrington, of this district, won on two mounts, viz., Marie Stuart and the King. Many of our readers will recollect a certain report which Mr. J. A. Wilson Bent to the Government, aud in which he made serious charges against Judge Rogan. Mr. Wilson's trump card had reference to the Judge's action re the Waingaromia block. A commission, which was appointed to investigate these charges, reported against Mr. Wilson on the main points. The mattei cropped up afterwards in the House, the upshot being that Henare Potae was induced to appeal. Now that Judge Halse has, after a patient hearing, upheld the former decision made by Judge Rogan, we are informed that the latter gentleman is about .to enter an action against Mr. Wilson, for slander and libel. It is estimated that it will take £5000 to put the roads and bridges in their old state of repair in the Waipawa County, Hawke's Bay. The damage at the Wairoa is comparatively light. ! His Honor Judge Kenny lately apologised to the members of the Napier Bar for his appearance in unofficial costume, namely, without his wig and gown, but he stated that the Union Steam Ship Company were carrying them up and down the coast. Typhoid and low fever are spreading rapidly in the Borough and suburbs of Timaru, and many of the cases under treatment are of a very serious nature. The insufficiency of the sanitary arrangements of the town is supposed to have led to the visit of these unwelcome guests. In the quarterly return of infected sheep in the district, puplished in our yesterday's issue, through a transposition in the figures, Messrs. Harris and Fergnsson are shown as 1,400 sheep, and Mr. King 14,000. It should be 14,000 and 1,400 respectively.
