A CURIOUS BET.

Through the decease of one of our leading public men (says the Z. N. Eree Press) a celebrated bet has come to the ground. The nature of this bet was peculiar* As we have learned, it was somewhat joa follows : — «' I **3et £100, that within years, — — now a member of the General Assembly, will be breaking ■tones at Mount Eden." The other part of the bet, the ex. change memo, is said to be singularly peculiar also. It runs aa follows : — "I accept the bet, and cover it with £100, on the ground that will be within years, Premier of New Zealand." The information given to us was that two sums of £100 each were invested in real property, and that a good interest was Becured. The disposal of the bets, when decided, was also very singular, and indicative of the character of the principals in the transaction. It is said that a memorandum provides that the money lost, in either case, with all interest accrued, shall be devoted to certain charities provided. As the whole transaction is said to have been carried out in strict legal form, it will remain a question whether the decease of one of the principals will invalidate the terms of the contract. If not (adds the Press), our local charities may yet be the richer, some day, from the singular bet.
