NEW ZEALAND STATISTICS.

The "Statistic^ of tho Colony of Now Zeulandjfor 1878," is n vouline of some 280 pages of tabulated matter. It contains particulars of population, trade, finance, law, &C, and is well worth a study by all and every one who feels an interest in the progress or position of the Colony. We propose to give a few figures taken from under the head of " Trade and Interchange," ourselves mainly to imports. The total declared valise of the^_ imports for the year ende'3 amounted to*" £8,756,667, of which the. United Kingdom contributed £5,333,170; Australian Colonies, "£2,333,891; United States * £432,576 ; China and Mauritius, £375, 663 ; India, £1.31,136, and the balance from miscellaneous sources. In round . figures, 60 per cent, came from the; United Kingdom, and 27 per cent, from the Anstsalian Colonies. Of soft goods and clothing we imported to the value -■ of £2,236,599 : of this amount £233,044 is for boots and shoe 3 ; £68,094 for hats and caps: £253201 for apparel and slops, and £1,223,947 for drapery. Of household furnishings we importer] to the tune of £338,399, of which £63,632 w.'-fo£ ; £ musical instruments, pianos alone re/.'""*" presenting £42,472 of. this amonefc. Of food and domestic articles, the import was £1,471,009: £69,776 being for flour and wheat; £49,011 for green fruits- j»'^ £44,960 for jams and jellies; £103,268" for candles, and £34,456 for matches. Of spirits, we imported £247,926 ; wine^Sl £103,281 ; and of beer, £115,207. To* bacco and cigars figure at £134,513. Of printed books, the imports were „ £113,098, and of materials for manu^rfacture, £258,952 : fencing wire, £100, 598 ; machinery, £266,560 ; furniture, £86,067 ; timber, £64,365 ; saddlery '■•-:■■ and harness, £73,676 ; and of <?oal, £268,436. Onr total exports, lesa specie, amounts to £8,217,177, and our exports- - £5,900,150 ; these are figures remarkable enough for a population of 465,000 of both races. Our wool exports „ amounted to 62,166,251 pounds weight, being an increase over the preceding year of 5,645,973 lbs. From another source we find that the total imports for . 1879 are £8,373,233, and our export* £5,742,916. ■.•■■•/
