WELLINGTON. This Day. In the R.M.s Court, on Saturday, Mr. Horace Lingard, comedian, sued E. T. Gillon, to recover certain fees paid as royalty two years ago to Mr. Gillon, as agent to Mr. George Coppin, of Melbourne, for permission to play certain dramatic pieces. Mr. Lingard said he paid the fees at the time under protest, as he was anxious to leave for America, but that Mr. Hoskins was the proper person for Gillon to have applied to, Lingard being merely under engagement to Hoskins. The Magistrate reserved his decision. A deputation of settlers at Foxton and Palmerston North, waited on the Minister of Public Works, urging him to begin the West Coast Railway at both ends, as it would open up land for settlement. Mr. Oliver agreed that it was important to open up settlement, and said the Government would bringdown a Village Settlements Bill ; but the financial position of the Colony was such at present that the works whidh were considered necessary, could not be proceeded with. It is stated that a redistribution of seats would involve an addition of ten more members to the House, including two Maoris. Major Heaphy has gone to Otaki to take up the work left by the late Judge Young of the Native Land Court. AUCKLAND. This Day. Mrs. Harding-Britten conducted a Spiritualistic Service on Saturday at the interment of a child of Mr. Potter, m the Anglican Cemetery. Portions of Anglican Burial Service were also read. She subsequently closed the service with an address which moved the mourners to tears. The bodies of George and Thomas Day, father and son, who were drowned m a boat accident, were recovered on Saturday. A mile race took took place on Saturday at Ellerslie, between Roth and McGinley, for £25 a-side. McGinley won by 8 yavds. Alburnias are quoted at from £4 to £4 ss. GRAHAMSTOWN. This Day. Ou Friday lightning struck the mainmast of the cutter Stag, while lying at Bagnall's Hauraki Saw Mills, cutting out a crescent-shaped splinter seven feet long, and causing much alarm to those on board. Tukukino's peonle have been busily engaged the last two days m mustering, preparatory to driving all European people from the Kotnatu Block. Alburnia mine prospects still favorable, there being a good show of gold m the stopes for about 40 feet. Sales were made on Saturday at £4 ss. Moanatairi shares hardening. Fivth's steamer Kotuku lies stranded on the sand bank m the Waihou River. It is heavily freighted. NEW PLYMOUTH. This Day. A child of Alexander Calons while playing near a well at the race course fell m and was drowned. CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. 'At a sale of race horses on Saturday, Fishhook was sold for 505 guineas and Lara for 176 guineas. Both were bought by Mr. Jobberns. ASHBURTON. This Day. On Saturday night, a destructive fire broke out m Fowler's general store, Tancred-street. Despite the exertions of the Fire Brigade, the fire extended to both sides, consuming altogether three buildings. One of them, a tinshop, kept by Hydes, was wholly uninsured, and Hydes is a very heavy loser. He has a large family, and is left utterly destitute. The fire has caused great excitement. DUNEDIN. This Day. The Caledonian Hotel, a wooden building m Walker-street, waß destroyed by I fire on Saturday afternoon. The origin lof it is a mystery. The furniture and effects of Hutton, landlord, were insured for £1000 m the Standard, partly reinsured. The building was insured m the Standard for £500
