A PRACTICAL POET.
The Tauranga paper has lately published gome heart-rending effusions by a rhymist, under such titles as "A Maiden's Lament," " True Love," &c. They have had the effect of firing with ambition the soul of another contributor, 'who has determined to dedicate his muse to practical rather than sentimental subjects. His first attempt is headed " The Grey-street Swamp. " We give the opening stanzas ; — The land of the dismal swamp, Where death and disease are bred, Where lie m majestic pomp The boues of unbuned dead — The rat, the cat, the frog, and the dog, Unburied lie m this noisome bog. And round it are homes so dear, Where innocent children play ; Where, close to the margin drear, Through the long bright summer's day, The sun at work with refulgent rays Will a score of offensive odours raise. , — We compliment the author on his successful combination of the utUe dulce. There are many places m the. island, outside of Tauranga, which would afford a fine scope for his peculiar genuis.— Telegraph.
