BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A.T the last meeting of the Borough Council, His Worship the Mayor gave a short resume of his efforts on behalf of the Borough, while on his recent visit to Wellington, and informed Councillors that he interviewed the Hon. Mr. Rolleston in reference to the endowments for the Borough, and had selected section 118 Patutahi, containing 1000 acres, Snd sections .Nos. 67, 68, 69, 70, 73, 75, 78, and 79 Ormond, containing 991 acres. These endowment sections ;ire now under consideration, and will be gazetted shortly ; but the Government has not yet decided their extent. As to the Borough Reserves the deeds for sections already granted amounting to 30 acres, are in course of preparation and when signed by the Governor will he available for leaae, and become a source of revenue. Captain Porter also made enquiries as to the probability of Railway and Harbor Works. He ascertained that the late Government, through the Hon. Mr Macandrew, had written a memorandum to Mr. Allan McDonald, M.H R. to the effect that they would undertake the Harbor Works and either vote a specific sum or grant an adequate amount of Crown Lands as an endowment for that object. With reference to the railway the present as well as the late Government were averse to constructing any unauthorised line. If a vote for roads had been applied for, probably it might have received the favorable consideration of the House, hut a railway was out of the question, and consequently the district is again fustrated in the intention of obtaining its quota of the public works expenditure. He also informed the Council that the Government were decidedly against giving any more Town Reserves to the Council at present.
