The total reserve of notes and bullion m the Bank of England is £19,500,000 News from Cape Town states that Sir Garnet Wolsely had interviewed a meeting of the Boers m the Transvaal, and announced thtf annexation oi the territory they occupied. The Boers replied that Independence alone would satisfy them. October 17. There have been large withdrawals of gold for Germany and North America. News from the Cape states that the war has been 'brought to a successful issue, and that the British troops have commenced to evacuate the territory of Zululand. CALCUTTA. October 17. General Roberts has entered Cabul. The mutineers entrenched themselves m the citadel of Bala Hisra, m the east quarter of the city. General Roberts attacked the citadel, and demolished it. MADRID. October 17Heavy and disastrous floods have occurred by the rivers overflowing, there have been enormous losses, and 300 people drowned.
