The Lyttelton Times states that a servant at the Kowai Pass Hotel while pumping water from the hotel pump, was considerably startled on seeing a fish emerging from the mouth of the pump. As a number of persons happened to be near at the time, the veracity of the affair is beyond doubt. The depth of the well into which the pipe is inserted is about 40ft., and various have been the conjectures to account for this strange fact. The fish is nearly five inches long and is sfcill alive. The prevailing opinion is that an underground current from the neighbouring river exists from which the well is supplied.
