WELLINGTON. This Day. On Saturday the Committee of Selection appointed Messrs. (Joibeck, Gisborne, Bam, Johnston, ' {Swiinaun, Montgomery and Whyte to be a committee to report whether the Auckland City West election petition is m ordei. Mr. Caleb, Wlntefooid has been appointed R.M. for Poverty Bay, with jurisdiction up to £100. The Customs returns published m Government Gazette, for the quarter ending September 30th, show a great falling off as compared with the corresponding quarter of last year. The {September quarter of 1878 amount was £365,484, whereas tlie quarter this year only amounted to £308,850. AUCKLAND. This Day. The men wounded m an explosion of the ammunition on buard the Naval Brigade pinance, are progressing favorably. James Mackay, special Native Commissioner, has gone to Piako, m connection with the late Native outrage. There will be a Volunteer review and sham tight at the Thames on the Prince of Wales' Birthday. At the Aratapu Sawmills, on Saturday, a boy, named Harry Jeffry, was creeping under the revolving shaft, when his apron was caught, and he was instantly carried over. The boy's body was fearfully mangled and broken before the engine could be stopped. He died shortly after being released. OHRISTOHURCH. This Day. A meeting of the unemployed was' held m Cathedral Square on Saturday. When a draft of a petition to Sir George Grey was adopted, asking him to use his influence m Bettling them on the Waimate Plains on the system of deferred payments ; and also that the Government should assist them with supplies and implements until they are m a position to pay for them. Thb coachbuilders and wheelwrights forwarded on Saturday a petition to Sir George Grey, to be presented to Parliament, praying far an increase of duty on articles m their trades. DUNEDIN. This Day. In Chambers, on Saturday, Judge Williams granted an order applied for on behalf of Charles Woodlock, for delivery of his infant male child, now m the custody of Mary Jane Woodlock pnd William Woodlock alias Waters. The latter is the person recently tried m connection with the fire m the Octagon. The Executive Committee of the Industrial Association has adopted a petition to Parliament, praying for the establishment of a discriminating tariff affording a measure of protection to local industries.
