BOROUGH COUNCIL.
At a meeting of the Borongh Council held last evening there were present : — Councillors Townley (m the chair), Adair, Whinray, Ward, Brown, Piesse, and Clayton. On the minutes of the previous meeting being read and confirmed, the Town Clerk read correspondence despatched and received by him. Correspondence. — From Mr. C. D. Berry, asking to be allowed to relinquish his contract. It was decided on condition that he signed fresh bonds, and a fresh contract, to permit him to supply the metal from Waimata instead of the Kaiti beach, at the same price. From the Under-Secretary, acknowledging the receipt of Borough Byelaws. The Town Clerk was instructed to publish the same to take effect from the Ist November. From Mr. G. Hughes, asking permission to lay a concrete pavement m front of Mr. W. Adair's premises. Granted subject to usual instructions. From Mr. G. Palmer, offering services as foreman of works, and enclosing testimonials. Information to. be sent that no opening at present exists. Be Public Library. — In the absence of the Mayor it was resolved '• That the discussion of this , matter be deferred until the arrival of His Worship. " The half-yearly balance sheet together with the auditors report were submitted, and on the motion of Councillor Ward, seconded by Councillor Piesse, adopted. Report of Public Works Committee. Niohtsoil. — We have accepted the tender of Messrs. Taylor and Batten for the removal of night soil, at 2s per box. Kerbing. — We would recommend the following sizes of timber for kerbing, viz. : 12 x 3 for kerbing, 8 x 4 for scarf posts, and 6x4 for intermediate posts, posts not to be less than 3 feet m length and 3 feet apart. .Timber to be heart of kauri, and to receive two coats of coal tar, scarfes included, upper edge to be secured by five-eight bolts and nut, other posts by 6 inch spikes. Scarfes are to be at an angle of 45. We do not consider channelling necessary at the present time. Contract for Metal. — Mr Berry intimates his intention Of not proceeding further with his contract, on the ground that the greater part . of the metal has been washed away by the late heavy gales and high tides. If such be the case we would recommend that the contract* be cancelled, .and that Mr Berry replace the punt m its original position. Mr Drummond will report on the quantity of metal that has been washed away. Tenders. For the supply of 500 cubic yards o Waimata gravel. Aooepted — Hugh Frazer, at 6s 6d per cubic yard. For Lease of Turanganui Ferry and Weighbridge. — Mark Davis, £72 ; John Score, £76 10s ; Capt. Bennett, £85 10s 6d ; H. Browlow, £90, accepted.
