A LOVE STORY.
A resident in Milton (says the Bruce Standard) tells the following story which he vouches for as being true, the parties concerned being all known to him. The incidents came off in the " land o' cakes." A buxom lass was* engaged to be married to a young farmer, but before the wedding solemnities came off another suitor appeared on the field, who, although somewhat older than the •' fiance," was better off pecuniarily. Arrangements were made for the young lady to be wedded to the latter individual ; the appointed day and hour came, but not the bride, who it was soon discovered, had eloped with her " first love." The bridegroom expectant, (who, by the way, served milk in GlasI gow,) was determined "not to be done." He requested the wedding party to keep themselves in readiness, and the parson to be prepared to conduct the ceremony at a very short notice. He went out, and standing his stick erect, decided to follow the course pointed out by its fall. He had not followed the road indicated by his stick far, before a fine looking young girl came to apply for milk,? he told her she was to be his wife, and i enquired where she lived. Fiding that she was the servant at the Banker's not far off, he went with her to the place. It appeared that the Banker was ■■ the manager of the Bank where he himself did business and, knowing him to be a substantial man, he recommended, *the girl to accept his offer, and the wedding oame off after all. The sequel is, however not a little romantic. It appears that the bridegroom had been upon very affectionate terms with a ." little dot of a girl" more than twenty years previously, and in fun they agreed to be married ; and after the wedding came off he discovered that he has become the husband of. a very young lady to whom he had jokingly given an offer of marriage so long ago. . ■
