THE LATE DIVISION.
The Wellington correspondent of the Auckland &tar thus describes the closing scene on the no confidence debate. When the division bell rang there was a hasty rush of members into the House from the lobbies. Long after the doors were locked Te Wheoro sat back in his seat, Messrs Hamlin and Beetham shepherding him, on their respective sides. Mr. Whitaker hastened over to Te Wheoro and appeared, so far*W"c*6*uTß" be judged from the gallery, to be urging Te Wheoro* to accompany him into the Opposition lobby, but Te Wheorouwfc. like a stick, while Mr Hamlin smiled a smile that was childlike and bland. Members stood on the floor of the House watching each other likje , defend mice^or more correctly, rats. MrPyke remained some time in the centre ,'-niak- 1 ing a pretence of deliberating," but at the nudge from a friend^ waddled into the Opposition lobby. Te Wheoro then rose calmly and walked coolly over into, the Government lobby with, the Govern-'' ment, a proceeding which ]$f Whisker; | and some others beheld with araaze'tnent I while Mr Hamlin followed, still smiUhg 1 ' [ like the rising sun at rosy morn. l I Enthusiastic cheers . were sent up, and I reverbrated through the empty Chamber. Ladies stood on tiptoe and stretched their beautiful swan-like necks ineagerness to behold the scene. Reporter'* seized their pencils and snatched a few notes and endeavoured to make anticipatory division lists. There was brief silence while the Speaker and Clerk of the House were making up the division lists, but exuberant smiles on the faces of Messrs Atkinson, Ormohd, McLean, and Hall betoken the results, f When) the Speaker declared the result ,• to bp "Ayes, 43," "Noes, 41," there was frantic Opposition hand clapping an'd Ministers' defiant cheers, and the Opposition leaders rushed out, and in their delight embraced honourable Lords who rushed down to meet them. and after which there were a great many at Bellamys. • > ■- \ ■/{ (
