NAPIER. This Day. At the nomination to-day of two candidates for the Maori election, the show of hands was as follows : — Henare Tomoana, 126 ; Henare Matua, 48 ; Henare Potae, 7 ; Jeni Tapihana, 3 ; Te Pokiha Taranui, 8. A poll was requested by Jeni Tapihana and granted for the Bth next. At the Clive nomination at Waipawa on Saturday, Messrs Ormond, Smith, and Sheehan were nominated. Mr. Smith, however, has withdrawn, andjproposed Mr. Sheehan. The show of hands was Ormond, 30 ; Sheehan, 27. Mr. Ormond addressed the electors in the evening iu the township of Clive, and received a vote of confidence. A large meeting was held in Napier at the Theatre Royal on Saturday night, when the aims and objects of the Liberal Association were explained and endorsed. Mr. Rees was the principal speaker, and made an excellent speech. A committee of 20 was appointed to carry out the objects of the association. WELLINGTON. This Day. The new Punch will be published in the Grey interest. Henry Lovering, steward of the steamer Albion, was charged at the R.M. Court with embezzling ship's stores to the value of £4 4s. The charge was dismissed on a technical point, but Lovering will be re-arrested. A fund is being raised to assist discharged patients from the Hospital. A deputation from the Liberal Association waited on Mr. Greenfield on Saturday, asking him to withdraw. He replied that he left the matter in |the hands of his committee. James MacKay has abandoned his intention of standiug for Waikato, having important negotiations to carry out on behalf of the Government with the Waimate Natives. NEW PLYMOUTH. This Day. The nomination for Egmont took place on Saturday, at Ometa toll-bar. Major Atkinson and Mr. Sherwood were nominated. Mr. Sherwood, being a stranger in that part of the district, had to trust to Atkinson's supporters to propose and second him, which was done. The show of hands was in favor of Atkinson. A poll was demanded by Sherwood. AUCKLAND. This Day. Mr. Shepherd has withdrawn from the Bay of Islands in favor .of Mr. Willians. In consequence of the committal of the captain of the ship Minister of Marine, a new crew will have to be shipped, as the old crew must remain for the trial. Mr. Stark has retired from City West, at the request of the Greyite Committee, leaving only Mr. J. Newman against the two nominees of the Committee, Dr. Wallis and W. J. Hurst, who are supposed sure of going in. Mr. R. J. Creighton writes from San Francisco, giving a horrible picture of the Chinese in California, and expressing a hope they will not be allowed to come to New Zealand in large numbers. GRAHAMSTOWN. This Day. AU the survey party escaped uninjured, except MacWilliams, who was wounded in the thigh, and is now in tlie Thames Hospital. A ball has been extracted, and though feverish, he is doing well. The block was being surveyed under the Land Purchase Department, and nnder the written authority of several Natives, the Government having some years ago made advances upon it through Mr. Mackay. There were about ten Natives in the attacking party. They belonged to the Ngatihaka, a small but turbulent tribe. The affair seems to have arisen through their discontent at the Block being sold. It consists of about two thousand acres. The Native Minister has the matter in hand. This Day, 4 p.m. An arrest party were to leave Paeroa at daylight to day, biit the friendly natives were afraid of an ambuscade, and refused to go. News was also received that the Natives had been reinforced from the Piako district, and would forcibly resist any attempt to capture the would-be murderers. Mr. Puckey, Native agent, officially orders the arrest. The party is not to start until reinforcements are received. Superintendent Thompson and Kenny left Paeroa for here at noon for that purpose. Mr. Sheehan returns again for Paeroa about 5 o'clock. Tlie above news was received a short time ago per Star carrier pigeon. PICTON. Tliis Day. Captain Kenny was returned unopposed on Saturday. PORT CHALMERS. This Day. Messrs. Macandrew and Green were . nominated on Saturday. Tlie show of hands was in favor of Macandrew. Green demanded a poll. INVERCARGILL. - This Day. Sir George Grey addressed on Saturday the largest meeting ever held here. He had an enthusiastic reception. A resolution approving of his policy, and expressing confidence in him as Premier, was carried by an overwhelming majority over an amendment of no confidence. OAMARU. This Day. Messrs. Shrimski, Hislop, and Stewart were nominated on Saturday. The show of hands was in favor of Shrimski and Hislop. Stewart demanded a poll.

(fkom a correspondent.) OPOTIKI. Saturday. Morris held a meeting last night, but.] only got a third to take part in the vote of confidence. On the resolution being put there were 28 for and 25 against. In answer to questions, he contradicted himself several times, and appeared completely at a loss to account for his action in Parliament. Johnson's meeting comes off to-night, but he does not appear to be making an active canvass and is apparently fraternising with Morris. All is looking well for McDonald here, and there was great rejoicing at the- success of his meeting in Gisborne. All the Natives votes are secured for McDonald. •
