CORRESPONDENCE.
[We do not hold ourselves responsible for opinions expressed by correspondents.] " There is a tide in the affairs of man, which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune."
[To the Editor oftlte Herald.] Sir, — Have you not observed the reaction which has commenced in Mr. Allan McDonald's favor ? The tide hasturned ; the flood has set in stiong, and despite the cry raised against him before he arrived, there is now no longer any doubt that he is the local man. Men who a fortnight ago were dead for another candidate, were a week ago doubtful, and are to-day asking to be put on his committee. • Men who would a week ago bet you 10 to 1 against him, are tp-day offering to back; him level, and a week hence will give tho 10 to 1 on him. Men who see the Grey party all through the Island steadily gaining power ; who see the Liberal candidate in the ascendant, are exhibiting prematurely all the symptoms of a nervous dread of their approaching fate. Sir, it strikes me that the opposers of the Ministry, which has offended them by taking up the cause of the majority — the Ministry which will hot allow of personal aggrandisement at the expense of the public— the Ministry which numbers among its supporters the unselfish and the honest well-wishers- of the laboring classes, as against those who desire to elevate one class and not all classes— those opposors are now beginning to find they are on the losing side, and they are looking uncommonly blue. They are not the men who make good losers ; they have neither the pluck nor the faith in their cause. For the most part they are hirelings, whose assistance is due to a lively sense of favours to come. But away with r such jackals. Men of the Bay, let us back up the party which really has our good at heart and which has no axes to grind and determinedly carry our man to the front. Shoulder to Shouleer.
