THE NATIVE MILLENNIUM.
"An Enemy to Impostors" m the Xfeio Zealand Times writes : — Sir,— When cash is so scarce, it may. gratify the people of this colony to know what has j ust tbeen told me by a gentleman m whom I can place implicit reliance for its truthfulness, And if carried out it will certainly tend to relieve the money market: It appears that some weeks ago the lion, and learned members for Auckland City East, who is known to take a deep interest m Maori matters on the East Coast, held a meeting of Natives, at which no Europeans were' present, when he intimated to the multitude of delighted listeners that he would shortly proceed to England with a letter of introduction from Sir George Grey to the Queen ; and that he would raise on native lands the sum of three millions, with which he would open banks at Napier- and Gisborne - and Wanganui. Said banks to belong to the natives; so that the natives could, draw cheques m the same manner as pakehas. The learned gentleman also intimated that he would take to England a number of Gisborne chiefs, to be introduced to her Majesty, and to show them the great interest the Queen took m their welfare. After the meetieg, just outside the whare, my informant described the eagerness of the natives to be taken to England, everyone assuring their friend that he was a great chief mdst anxious to see the Queen. Of course all was promised the trip, and great were; the rejoicings of these credulous natives/ May I ask you if it is not the duty of the Government to investigate into ; this business, which, to say the least of it, is calculated to destroy all confidence of the natives m European people ?
