This Day. Mr. Thomas Watson, an old identity, died yesterday. He was resident since 1840. Mr. Hobbs distributed £100 of his honorarium among the local charities. Election addresses are issued by Mr. F. Moss, for Parnell ; Mr. R. Hobbs, for Franklyn; Mr. W. G. Hurst, for Waitemata, and Mr. Swanson for Newton. An inquiry is proceeding at the RiM. Court into charges of cruelty to a . sea-, man, against the master and mate of the ship Minister of Marine. .Detective Jeffery arrested, on a warrant from Sydney, a man named Mark Van Pragg, charged with stealing. £60, ■ the property of a dealer named Simmons. It is believed to be a case, of elopemont. Van Pragg was accompanied by Mrs Simmons and her child, and they have lived together since their arrival m Auckland as Mr. and Mrs. Phillips. They arrived m the Tararua oh her last trip from Sydney via Wellington, and are supposed to have been waiting an opportunity to leave for San Francisco by the mail boat. Van Pragg Was an omnibus driver m Sydney. He was brought up at the Police Court, and remanded for eight days, so that he may be handed over to a member of the Sydney detective force, who is expected to arrive by the mail boat. ■ At a meeting of the Auckland Regatta Club the financial condition of the club was reported to be excellent, there being a balance of £100 m hand. Four silver cups, valued at £100, are offered for various races. The champion schooner race of 50 tons and upwards, which excited so much interest throughout the colony last year, will have a prize of close on £150, besides a valuable sextant for the sailing master. Mr. Roche is out .for Waipa, Mr. Macfarlane for Waitemata, and Messrs. Shepherd and liand for Rodney, making four candidates for that seat.
