THE VALUATION OF KAWAU.
The following letter on the above subject appears m the New Zealand Times of Friday last :— • . Sib, — An article m the Post of this evening states that members of the Opposition, ie, of the majority of the representatives of the people, have been anxious to ascertain the net valuation _ put upon Sir George Grey 'b. property m the Island of Kawau. I have no knowledge that any members of the House have been pushing inquiries on this subject ; but having been rated as I conceive exorbitantly for land tax purposes, I havei as a private individual, thought it due to myself and children to ascertain the amount at which the Premier, who appoints, and can at pleasure remove— a la Khedive of Egypt —the final judge of appeal m land tax cases, is assessed. I find the following result : — Kawau, five thousand two hundred and sixty- 1 * nine ; aores(s269) ; capital value, twenty- . one thousand four hundred and seventy pounda(£2l,47o) ; improvements, nineteen thousand two hundred pounds" (£19,200) ; net value, two thousand one; hundred and seyen poundß (£2107). I have no-wiah to dispute the- accuracy of > this calculation ; but if other' properties m New Zealand are assessed \on a different and higher scale, the Premier does not papr his, fair share of taxation. It sometimes pays, even inlcaah, to be art " advocate of the 80-caUed rights of humanity. — I am, &c. l; rr> g < j.' 15. Andrew.
