GISBORNE DEBATING SOCIETY.
The ustjal fortnightly meeting of this society took place., last evening, m the Court House. In spite of the inclemency of the weather, a very fair number' of members- were m attendance. ' The President occupied the chair. The rules, as framed by the Committee appointed, were read and adopted. The extempore debate was then announced from the chair. -The subject chosen being: " Will the' death of tlie Prince Imperial tend to consolidate Republicanism or Monarchism m France ?' Mr. Carlaw Smith led off on the side of Monarchism m a very able speech, supported by Messrs. Brassey, McLeod, and E. K. Brown. The side of the Republicanism was well argued, and; sustained by the following members :■ Messrs. A. C. Arthur, J. Cuff, W. File, Capt Chrisp, and Dr. Pollen. An expression of votes on the question resulted m a majority .of 3 fdr Republicanism. The debate chosen for next evening of meeting was announced, viz., " Would the Colony be beneiitted by the selling or the leasing of Crown Lands V
