TE ARAI.
(prom a oobbespondbnt.)
July 21st, 1879. The roads, of course, are in a bad state, but better than they were a short time ago. The Maories are ploughing and putting in wheat to the extent of 100 acres or more. * The punt, which was at the Ferry Hotel, has been moved down to, the mouth of the Big River (Pakirikiri), but as yet, it is not working satisfactory.; The punt is too large for the purpose ; it takes about half -an-hour to cross over. The same party who had the punt at the Ferry Hotel, is the proprietor of it. He purchased a rope at the oost of £40, but it is too heavy. to be of any use. He informed me that he was ; proouring a lighter one from Auckland, when he hoped to be able to get over his difficulties. • • The contractors of the Arai Bridge arrived from Auckland- last week, and they were here on^£&Sisiay< looking for a place in the Bi&Jltfer to land their Umber. The vessel with the timber is expected every day, when they come they proceed at onoe" to the Big River, without calling at-Qiaborne. . We had a general meeting of Te Arai Highway Board on Saturday last; The following members were elected wardens for the coming year : — Messrs.' J." W. Johnson, J. E. Brown, Duncan' Frazer, Chas. Evans (Chairman), and Duncan MaKay.
