HAWERA.

July 21. The Maoris are returning from Parihaka. Many leading friendly Maoris, who were previously pawn regarding the ploughing, return with professions of joy because Te Whifci says the ploughing will be suspended on the settlers' farms. It is stated that l the next agressive move of the natives [ is to be the erection of huts — practically puhs — on the main road across the Plains, about six or seven miles from Hawera, near Kapuui river. The ostensible object is to plough and crop and provide food for wayfarers. Such a movement if attempted, would however, be checked, as it would give the Maoris another lien over the Plains. The Maoris still insist that there will be no fighting — they laugh at the statement in circulation about Te Whiti having ordered that possession be taken of the stores and residence of Mr. Gamon. Te Whiti says that the Maori prisonei* will soon return, in the meantime the others must work extra hard and provide food for the wives of the martyrs. Te Whiti says that the prisoner Whakawhiria was his race horse. As Pharaoh carried out Joseph's interpretations of the dreams, and provided for years of famine, if Whakawiria carried out his interpretation of signs of the time all the prisoners would soon come baok amidst thunder, lightining, and vain. He says he has placed all the power over prisoners in the hand of Whakawiria.
