The Poverty Bay Herald AND East Coast News Letter. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING. MONDAY, JULY 21, 1879.

There is balm m Gilead. Dropping metaphor, there .are good times close at hand, for Gisborne and the districts of Poverty Bay. The acting Land Purchase Commissioner, hasjust forwarded to t Mr. Gill, Under Secretary of Native Land Purchase, at Wellington, particulars of Native Blocks which, before they become the property of the Crown, will -require to be paid for them the sum of £71,490. Of this amount quite .£I O,OOO will come to hand some time during the course of the present week. The following will' show particulars m detail, and will doubtless be perused with interest. \ First — There are lands for which deeds of conveyance are nearly complete, 27 blocks, containing an area of 345,026, acres. The sum immediately requireed to complete these purchasers is £8,945. Second— Lands passed the Court, the deeds of which are m course of preparation, consist of 15 blocks, containing an.area of 1 1 8,722 acres. The sums required to complete the purchases are £20,310. Third — Lands on which advances ,

have been made, comprising 24 blocks, containg an estimated aveaof '276,173 acres. The sums required to complete these purchases amount to .£38,435 ; making a total area of lands under negotiation of 739,927 acres, requiring m all £71,490. Thi-« large amount of money will be paid to Native owners ; and as it is well known tlfe Maori does not hoard his money, but spends it freely among all trading classes of the community, there will be these thousands almost immediately m circulation ; and again so soon as the ' purchases have been completed, the blocks become vested m the Waste Lauds Board, who will offer them for sale m. the usual mannei*. This will bring purchasers into the market ; for very much of the land is of magnificent quality, and what is of equal importance, the titles will be indisputable. Thus, Poverty Bay will be benefitted by the money paid to the Maoris as well as by the money the county will rece: ye as its share of the Land Revenue. Not only these advantages will accrue but the land, when purchased, will be stocked with sheep and cattle, or will be cultivated, giving at once profitable employment to labor, and an increased impetus to trade from the expenditure of capital. So that we may truly say there is yet balm m Gilead.
