Thus irreverently does the Canterbury Rangiora Standard discourse : — " The members of this extraordinary starchedup body, the Canterbury Ministers' Association, have lately made great fools of themselves, and we perceive that from one. end of New Zealand to the other, public journals are turning fopm into ridicule for their extraordinary behaviour when inflicting fin oral castigation upon Sir Hercules Robinson. These worthy clerics, imbued with their own self importance, thought proper, it may be recollected, to place on record their disapproval of His Excellency travelling on Sundays. And they opened forth the vials of their wrath and deluged him with floods of sanctimonious acrimony. If these inflated bags of mischief who, like limpets on a rock, cling to. the body ecclesiastic and try to extract financial juices from the public which support them, would put into practice the most elementary diota of Christianity, and m. humbler places, too, instead of trying to give themselves tone by flying at higher game, it would indeed be much better for the cause which they are supposed to advocate. We would like to know how many of those asetics, for instance, visit the poor and the sick m Christchurch. Their efforts m the cause , of true religion, unfortunately, seldom take them to quarters where " good society " and its succulent perfumes are not to be found. Kid-gloved Christians, whether they be clergymen or lay people, have seldom done much good m the Cathedral City."
