The Poetry Bay Herald AND East Coast News Letter. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING. SATURDAY, JUNE 28, 1879.
The intelligence which reached our office this morning, and which we published in the form of an "extra," indicates only too clearly that the issue between the Maories on the West Coast and the Europeans will have to be decided by the sword. "We do not see any way of turning back, or averting hostilities by any compromise which would not be degrading to the honor of the Government as representing English people. There is now some grounds for believing that while the Premier, (Sir George Grey), and Mr. Sheehan, Native Minister, has been endeavoring to fool Rewi, that the subtle chief has been fooling Ministers. Rewi, it may not be generally known is half-brother to Te Wetere, and that the latter has 'iip to the present hour escaped hanging for the brutal murder of the Rev. Mr. Whitely and family. It is now far from * certain that Rewi has not .been conspiring with Te "Wetebe tp bring about all the troubles which threaten the Europeans. New invasions have been made on lands heretofore. left untouched, and other outrages are threatened. Now it is time to try issues. Are the Maories to keep the country in an intermittent state of excitement and terror, or are they to' be subjected to European rule for once and for always 1 Which is it to be — the Maori or the settler 1 This is the question. We are glad, then, that Ministers have expressed a determination in Snaking a stand ftgainst Maori aggression. If there is to be war — and. Wetere has declared for it — then let the battles be fought out to the bitter end. No more compromises. No more sugar and flour. Not a gun to be permitted in the hands of a hostile Maori. Not an acre of land that may be conceded to him unless he has fought on the side of the Government, and has helped to extinguish the flames of war, so that ' that there is no chance of its ever being re-kindled.
