The intelligence from Hawera, which we published m an " extra " this morning, continues to intensify day by day. The . settlers, impatient at what'- appears the apathy of the Government, have formed themselves into a defence and viligance Committee, with Mr. Livingstone at their head. The committee intend to Carry out the peace policy, by quietly preventing the destruction of property by deluded natives, and an ejectment committee has been appointed for removing intruding natives peaceably, but if they refuse to be removed peaceably, — well then, there are armedforces, m the Light Horse and Hawera Rifles, who will have to be called into requisition. There can be no doubt of it, that the present juncture is very critical, and calls for great determination, tempered with great discretion. It is natural that the Government should wiah to avoid hostilities, but it is natural that settlers should combine to protect their homesteads from spoliation, and their lands
from being trespassed on. If by any means, or by any reward offered, the person of the dangerous fanatic prophet Tb Whiti could be taken, so that he might be lodged m a prison or a lunatic asylum, there would be every probability of peace being secured.
