HAWERA.

This Day. ; The bullocks belonging to the Natives ploughing at Oakura were put m pound. The Natives applied to the Inspector of the Constabulary to get them released, but he said he had nothing to do with it, and then paid the fees and got the bullocks out. The settlers who x*emoved the Natives yesterday, took four of them prisoner as hostages for the safety of the European population ; but the action was not endorsed by the Hawera settlers, and Major Brown wisely ordered the prisoners to be released and not brought into Hawera. This caused great relief to the settlers. The Maories show no signs of fight m them but all the; settlers who can are under arms, .but they are shox*t of arms and ammunition and many men are still without rifles. Business is entirely suspended m Hawera. ' ; - -■
