FOOT ROT IN SHEEP,
I Have obtained the following simple recipe for the prevention . aiid : cure of foot rot m sheep, from a gentleman who has tried it successfully ; and I send itr to you hoping that yon will find it a place m your columns for tho benefit of the unfourtunate sheep afflicted with that painful disease, and to those of their owners who care to pro Vent it I may mention that the gentleman who gave me the information, gave up keeping sheep altogether for some years because the land on winch they grazed seemed favourable to the development of the disease. Since trying this recipe, he has never had any difficulty m keeping them sound :— To prevent ; the * appearance of sheep rot, so common among sheep grazing on damp pastures, take up the sheep once every three or four weeks, examine their feet carefully, any dead or broken part of the hoof, so that no dirt can^ lodge m the craok, taking care on no accbunt, however, to draw blood or cut into the quick. T£ ;any sheep is sblre ' or raw about th& "■" claws," apply a salve composed of; bluestone vitrol £oz., (crushed to a powder), lard 2oz M and Venice turpentine 30z., well mixed together, pare the hoof, and keep the sheep m a dry place for four or live hours. If after four or five days there is Wo improvement, apply more salve \ and if; the disease has got underneath the other hoof, pare the other hoof off, but without making it bleed, and nature will soon replace it by another. On damp land sheep should not be kept more than one or at most to seasons. By these means farmers can always prevent either the. disease or the remedy from ever becoming severe.
