It is satisfactory to learn by our telegrams that the Government have been aroused to a sense of the existing danger by the threatenings of Te Whiti and the actions of his allies. Preparations are now being actively made on a large scale to crush out Native resistance, and to bring the Maones to understand that the Government do not intend to temporise with them any longer. If the Maories do not withdraw themselves, and allow the settlers to remain peaceably on their holdings, then there is to be war, and nothing short of it. But even something more than the withdrawal of the Maories from the lauds of the European will be insisted on. They must give such guarantees for future good behaviour as will allow the settlers to feel assured that their safety from encroachment and attacks shall be permanent. The Armed Constabulary force is now being strengthened by the enlistment of volunteers. These are being trained as far as time will allow. Supplies of arms and ammunition have been forwarded ; the settlers are enrolling themselves and drilling for service, all redoubts are being repaired and put m a state of readiness for occupation ; new earthwork entrenchments are being thrown up at suitable points, and arrangements are being made for the assistance of 1000 Ngatiporous and other friendly natives ; two hundred of the | Armed Constabularly will be despatched from Wellington immediately ; from this there is a determination expressed on the part of the Government that Maori invaders of European's land shall be sent to the right about, or they will have to accept the consequences.
